Why do my reality checks always fail right when I am about to lucid dream?
I have been practicing WBTB for about three weeks now, and I feel like I am finally on the cusp of something real. Last night, I did my reality checks religiously—pinching my nose, looking at my hands, the whole routine. I actually felt that weird, heavy vibration in my limbs that everyone talks about, and I thought, this is it! But then, in the dream, I checked my hands and they looked perfectly normal. I just accepted it and went back to wandering around some bizarre, neon-lit version of my childhood home. It is so frustrating to be so close, yet my brain just refuses to acknowledge the glitches in the matrix. Does anyone else get stuck in this 'almost' phase where your subconscious just gaslights you during the reality check? I feel like I am playing a game of chess against my own REM cycle. Any tips on making those checks more 'sticky' so I do not wake up disappointed every morning?

I feel your frustration! I remember when I first started WBTB, I’d get so excited that my heart rate would spike, effectively waking me up the second I realized I was dreaming. It sounds like you are hitting that 'lucidity threshold' but getting over-stimulated. When you do your reality checks, try to ground yourself in the sensation of your hands or the air pressure. Instead of getting hyped that it's working, try to maintain a state of boring, calm observation. Are you using any particular anchors during the WBTB transition, or are you just letting your mind wander? Sometimes a gentle mental focus, like counting breaths, keeps the executive function of the brain active without pulling you out of the dream state. Stick with it, you are clearly making progress!
